Why did this Massive Oil Spill Happen ?
89
Coming Together
It seems that this Oil spill is bringing companies and people together, and in this world it just doesn't happen as much as it should. They say this could be the worst Eco disaster that the world has ever seen.
BP has asked anyone who was willing to listen to help contain this massive spill, they said if this hits lands fall it could destroy the Eco systems on the hole eastern sea coast of the United States.
Right now they are very concerned about the extreme southern areas, but are keeping a very close eye on the eastern part as well.
What Caused this Massive Spill ?
They know now it was a methane bubble that escaped from the well and shot up the drill column, expanding very promptly as it blasted through several of the main seals, that's when the explosion happened according to the Rig workers that were there.
Before all this happened, a group of BP Executives were on board celebrating the safety record of this particular project, and at the time they were converting the rig from an exploration well to a production well.
Way beneath the sea floor methane is in crystalline form, and at any given time they could hit that nasty gas, that's just the chance they take with the Eco system.
As the methane bubble came up through the drill column from the high pressure environs of the deep to the pressurized shallows, the bubble increased breaking through the safety barriers they said.
According to one interviewer a gas cloud surrounded the rig causing the drill head to run to fast, which caused it to explode and catch fire, with all that gas that was around the rig it was by Gods grace that everyone wasn't killed at that time.
What is being done to clean this up ?
The amount of Oil that is pouring into the Gulf in just one day is phenomenal, they say it's up to 210,000 gallons a day. For the Golf of Mexico clean and containment effort they are taking out all the stops, if you know what I mean.
Experts have fixed one of the three leaks so far, and now are lowering down a containment vessel on top of the main spill. which they say should contain about 85% of the spill if it works like they hope. But on the other hand, the back up plan is to drill relief wells which could take up to three months.
Main industries like the fishing and tourism been hit very hard by this catastrophe. Tourism is very big there as everyone knows, there are lots of family's canceling there holidays for good reason, but the people who need them to make a living will be hit very hard in the pocket book by this.
This picture you see here is the containment vessel their going to use for the clean up, there isn't much more info I can give. but I will keep on top of this and let you all know what is happening.

Wolfpack, why it happened is not important. Let's get it under control clean up the mess and then make sure it doesn't happen again.
Dave.
I need to know this for a project in school so thx...
this web site was very useful but you should add more info please
thanks!!!!
I learned a lot in this website. this is very useful
i will always visit your site!thank you so much
My Lord ! I did not know this was happening in my own home state. I truly hope they get the ball rolling and stop the waste. God Bless You.
thanks for writing. it is so sad. I just walked outside and I can smell it. we need miracles.
Negligence.
Unfortunately these things happen but it has created many job opportunities in Oil Spill cleanup field. For more info
Thanks wolf, youre such a caring man -- you shall be the Ambassador for the environment, Maita
Thank you for this hub. The amount of oil spewing out from this is truly staggering. Can't imagine the immense damage this must be doing to all the rich life in these waters - so tragic.
Hope they can fix this ASAP and hope they can come up with better systems and checks to avoid such spills in the future.
Thanks again WP for sharing this!
oh wow i hope they get this cleaned up soon so it doesnt affect the ecosystems
Don't you find it odd that this spill hasn't effected gas prices? This fact proves we Americans got taken advantage of in 2006-2009 without a doubt.
This unfortunate situation could very well end up being the result of multiple acts of negligence, sheer stupidity and criminal misconduct.
We need to investigate for multiple reasons, to prevent future occurrences is one. But do not forget, eleven people lost their lives, more were injured, maimed and/or will suffer mental issues that will also affect their families for several generations.
There are also an unknown number of people that will have their lives and livelihood disrupted, most likely for a very, very, very long time. Not to forget the ecological damage that will result, a loss for all humanity, as well as Mother Earth.
There are reports of continued operations with known damaged and defective equipment, if this is true, then it is a criminal act, that should be handled in the court system.
There are also questions as to the response provided to date, whether it is as extensive and through as could and should be.
Are the chemical dispersants the safest, most effective available?
Are people being reimbursed for their losses in a timely manner?
There are many issues yet to be discovered.
Let's keep an open mind, and an inquisitive nature.
good work dear ,
quite informative hub
keep putting up something more informative
Thanks ®ards
Sometimes I wonder where the ecosystem is headed. Now I see.
Thank you wolfpak5. I never registered for hubpages but I always make note to visit 3 of my favorite writers. I appreciate the time yu put into getting this information we all dearly crave to have.
Does BP intend on paying for this entire fiasco? OR, is it going to be JOE tax payer. What a mess!
Some people argue we need to drill more domestically. Ya, RIGHT.........This is a perfect example of how incompetent these oil companies are.
Look out at the gas pumps this summer, BPs gonna need some extra cash !!!!!!!!!!!!
and think of all the fish the oil spill will kill in the gulf. i guess shrimp prices are going up lol
Your hub is very informative...Thanks for sharing!
I recently had a class in science, in one of my papers I discussed the effects of the Exxon Valdez disaster and the effects it had the on environment of Prince William Sound. You mentioned in a response that you can’t imagine how many fish will be killed, as well as other wildlife. In the March 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill there were over 300,000 animals, such as otters, bald eagles, seabirds, and harbor seals and even orca whales that were lost to this disaster, and billions of area fishery eggs that included salmon and herring. Some of the species of animals are just beginning to recover; some have not even started on the road to recovery. The spill had a huge impact on the area economically through recreational sports, reduced tourism, and fisheries. I hate to think about it, but it looks as though we will have very similar results in and around the gulf, unfortunately on a larger scale.
very well written hub, I look forward to reading more from you.
crazy stuff happens in this world every day
knowing that they were taking the RISK to drill underwater. they should of had back up plans and MORE!
its too late now, however i do respect the effort of those trying to help contain the spill and those on hand with the marine and wildlife surrival.
there is not too much info on the status of them thou.
how does it effect them and what type of dangers does it cause to stop the oil spil twards them...
they being the MARINE LIFE && WILDLIFE.
Great Hub Wolfy. It's such a complicated and tragic event, I hope they solve the problem soon. All those poor animals.
I think the earth is feed up with the lack of respect people have for her. They've taken pass her limits and now she's showing her wrath. I think now is the time they seriously consider other energy sources because it may be a whole lot worse if somthing like this happens again. I truely pray I doesn't tho.
thanks for the insight.(note to "Dave Matthews",the whole purpose of this hub is so that we are "informed", all information is pertinent as to how it started and what we (they) are going to do do to "fix" it. thanx
Hey wolfpack 5 ur a star i need this for my school project u just gave me an A+ probably tyvm
seriously Im ready for them to fix the problem
Hello
why did this happen? I know personally, my father is a professional. They were afraid of losing too much money, if they cut it off too soon, then sent a ruse to hide the fake attempts at stopping it, the only way to stop the pressure is to redirect it, not bubbles or chemicals to break it down below the surface, My father is one of many trying to fix BP's stupid mistake, but one that will happen. The fact of the matter ,despite extremists is that oil and gas naturally reach and leek on the surface of the oceans at a faster pace and the leek is a drop in the bucket compared to the oceans vast size, remember people the ocean is much larger than the polluted and used land you live on!!! Never the less, the only solution is to redirect this leek to another source.
what day did the pipe break?
how many days has the pipe been brocken?
thank you for the help
Hi, I needed this information for school thanks do you have anymore information on this?
Thanks
You bunch of nerds! geta life wolfpack! like wtf!?!?!?
many tnaks i had to use the site ;D
But yeah get off the computor you sad freak
many thanks
josh

We seem to be at the beginning of the end of oil production. I am a teacher of organic spirituality-so I have been asked this question "why the oil spill" over and over again. I don't see a big metaphysical answer to this question. I think we humans are struggling to maintain and survive yet have not been educated to the many other ways of survival. Eventually after several more spills the alternative energies will finally be a main sorce of industry. Then-and only then-will the oil spills stop.
We are just more than physical people living in a physical form. And, the more than physical aspects of oil are rulling us right now.
I get how it happened but the real question is, why did the oil spill happen? please answer a soon as you can. thanks, Allycat
Why can't you answer faster? don't listen to josh but you need to answer Alleycats answer because I was thinking the same answer. But how do you know about all this stuff? why can't this oil spill just stop? how did they make the oil tube keep giving out oil without emptying? Thanks hugs and kisses Happy...... xoxoxoxox
when did this oil spill happen?
Is there somekind of enzyme or something that can break the oil thats already leaked down?
to everyone who this effects im sorry and my thoughts are with you.
You should spell check this entire page. Didn't find a paragraph that was completely correct. Good information though.
This was useful for my project for school... Thank you so much! :D
thanks
I have to wonder what it is also doing to the air. I can't even stand to look at the pictures anymore.
news "ticker" (Saturday I believe). Goldman Sachs owned about 56% of BP's stock, yet they sold their interest shortly before the whole disaster. There doesn't seem to be much news coverage about THAT.
Hi wolfpack5,
This is very interesting, possibly the best explanation of what happened that I've found so far. However, I was wondering where you got your information? I need to write an essay about this for a course and I'm not sure if I am able to use .com websites as a source...Would you mind telling me what website or news article or news cast you got this info from? Thanks so much for your time.
The people of the BP Oil Company should fix this problem and quick. People can figure out how to send a rocket into space but can't even fix this problem? It is absolutely terrifying to see the animals struggling in this environment. Hopefully a miracle will happen soon....
Also, BP Oil Company cannot afford this careless mess they made. How do you expect for them to pay it off if they even can?
I give all my blessings to all of the wildlife in danger of this tragedy.
Thank you for the helpful artical I learned a lot from it. Thank You

Thanks ! i needed to know for school homework :D x
hey wolfpack, are the remedies also shared in this hub???
because after getting the information about the causes, the next step should be learning about the possible remedies.kindly, give me the link.
thank you
have a gudngt
thx for the info its rlly helped me wiv my skool project ;)
thanks this is all good for the geography homework
Cant somebody or a group of people go down there and fix it themselves, or is it too far deep??
hi i thought id say am 12 and i used this website to get some information in science so thanks man.. you helped me alot :)
Im doing a research paper in my composition class and this site was very helpful. I just wish that myself personally could do something to help. And I wish they would speed up the process in fixing this thing
thanks a lot m8 it well helped
Living in Australia I don't hear much about the details of how this disaster happened so thanks for the information.
I heard on tonight's news that 'they' are confident that the leak will be blocked. If they are going to use the devise that was shown on the news I say "good luck" but I just can't see it working!
I was recently in Florida the week that the "tar balls" hit the florida beaches. The locals were devestated at what this would do to their livelihood. It really opened my eyes to what the spill is doing to us.
A horrible event. Very informative hub. Thanks
Sometimes things happen to show us the errors of our ways? Everything happens for a reason, we are here to learn from that! Look up Author Lorna Byrne she has some of the answers as to why this oil spill happened? You are on the right track by spreading the word, carry on with the good work i admire you loads x
This spill was bound to happen. Nothing is perfect and every once in a while we see its evidence. I hope the damage is limited and I am sure BP is much more cautious then they are before.
Thank you for this well written article. I just returned from a Roundtable discussion with visitors from the Gulf Coast, who have been affected personally, and financially from this on-going disaster. We need to urge our Senators to move forward on the Clean Energy Act. If not today, when? If not you, who?
We've been following the oil spill updates since day it happened because my daughter is completely obsessed with the environment. Every time I hear anything about it all I can think of is how it takes such an awful thing to remind people of their humanity. Too many see themselves as gods.
Very informational, thank you!
Since I've heard of the news on oil spilling, I just hope that there are some solutions to prevent the situation from getting worst or something like that. Thanks for sharing the article
Usefull info, great hub, thanks.
As Dave commented 2months ago, Its not important why it happened, its important to get it under control. 2 months later we are all still wondering when it is going to get under control.
Such a tragedy. I hope they will be able to fix it soon. It's taking forever. :(
Lannie is right, it is taking forever. Maybe they are still trying to figure out WHY it happened instead of figuring out how to end it:-)
Good to see the new cap working, lets hope it holds up.
i need this for my homework and i found it verry useful ...thnxs :)
i like hobbos
Thanks for the info!:)
There is alot of mockery of BP lately and in one of the vids, they said that there 1st solution was to "fit a shopping centre over the spill" im not quite sure if it was a hyperbole or they actually place somethin as big as a shopping centre over it.
sorry i didnt make my self very clear, as i read it to myself. >.<
I was meant to say what was there very 1st solution they tried, becuase i heard that they just tried to place somethin massive over the spill to glog it. And wat were their procedures they toke?
This oil spill i really hope they clean it up before gas prices got to go higher i mean i have 5 vechicles that me and my husband drive and i just cant have the gas prices go up anymore!!
thnks this rlly help me with my skool project
Thanks alot this helps with my school work, which was greatly needed! thanks Wolf!
Thankyou sooo much, i needed to answer a question for humanities. VERY INFORMATIVE, thanks wolfpack5
I am doing this for a school project and I was wondering when did you right this... it is for my bibliography and your article really helped...
Thanks for the information .. found it quite useful.
i need to know more info bout this
Used this for a school assignment, and found it really helpful.
Thanks mate.
very informative information in hub page community so keep it
Why it happened is gross negligence, and greed. All these oil companies care about is the bottom line and getting their big pay checks. We all as a nation need to keep reducing out dependence on oil.
The hub of a great
Thanks for the descriptive paper. I don't know what else I would've done.
One question, what is "the well"? Could you please explain all about "the well" to me. Thanks.
Thank you @Wolfpack5, you are very helpful.
Too often when accidents of this nature occur, the first thing people want to do is attack the company involved and use it as a means to further their political viewpoints.Whether it's the green team or haters of big business,we've had to hear bleeding hearts of all nature.Yes it is an unfortunate event, yes they should learn from this and figure out if there is any procedures they could change to prevent another occurrence of this type.NO,accidents will never be 100% avoidable.Whether it's human error or a fluke incident such as this, you can implement any legislation you think may help and it still might happen again.Everyone everywhere worldwide enjoys the benefits of oil.You may not think so,and you may want to stand high and mighty on your political and moral perches, but in the end unless you are willing to give up all of the medical advances based on plastic
(made from petroleum)then maybe you should lighten up your bandwagon riding schedule to beat on big oil.I could probably do a hub on this issue and name several more conveniences big oil affords us.So often people only identify them with fuel products and it's my belief to be that narrow minded in an assessment of a company is not only wrong but misguided.
thanks wolfpack5 i needed info for my projects :) :()
Hey Chance good stuff;
This happened cause people were lost in the sauce,
Their too busy doing other things yet they neglect to realize that their were matters at home to take care of;
Instead of abroad,
One needs to really wake up to smell their coffee brewing !
Hey wolfpack5, a great hub and informative. I never knew what caused the explosion. It is true that the human race would not be where we are today if it were not for fossil fuels like oil, gas and coals, but it is important for us and our future to start using other methods to get energy.
Hopefully we will be able to produce clean energy in mass production before the world really starts to suffer. It is not only about the environment, but also that fossil fuels are getting depleted.
Thanks again for this great hub :)
can u do my project?
WOW, this was really informative...
Thanks so much....helped a lot
Thanks , i don`t think it was that usefull because i needed it for a science project.
Thanks so much, this is probably the most helpful site i've used for my science report :)
2+2=
By the way, do you know any of the possible solutions that they're thinking about??? Thanks again:)
the oil spill is bad
What date was this Event
Thank you for the information. it was very helpful for my school project.
excelent
you need more information because it did not answer all my questions for homework, but i guess you done an alright job.
i am 10 and i am just interested. are you a real person or is it just the website.
please answer
The writing was really helpful for a school project i had to do. Some of the websites i tried did not have the info that i nedded, but yours did! Thanks
I had to write about this for a school essay thanks for the info =)
Nice information. Now we could understand in simple ways why does oil spill happens. I guess a little sense of being careful could minimize this unlikely event.
Very informative hub, thanks for sharing this.
thanks for sharing, there were many aspects you discussed that I had questioned and not been able to find thru the media's articles
I like the way you explained the oil spill. Simple and straight to the point. :)
The oil spill is really the worst human made disaster.
Thanks so much for this wonderful post this is the kind of thing that keeps me on track through out my day.
I'm having a go at this topic. Thanks for writing it for I've lots to learn by reading. Hub up.:)
very thoughtful of you...not only the marines but human too are on the verge of losing end...Image the amount of marine flora that has been destroyed.!
We need hope and faith. Its the only way to clean it up
i am in the 6th grade and have looked forever for information on this for school so thank you for putting this up for everyone to read it helps for more then just reading and wondering it also helps students in school to learn THANK YOU
Where did you get your information?
aha this was great you won't believe how difficult it was to find the actual reason why the rig exploded.. but i found it :) and wolf pack i know this is a big thing but you commented like everyday you should get out more :D ehehe but Ur hubs were useful :) thanks so much
Dear Wolfpack,
I am doing a school project on this subject and I have a few question for you and it would be great if you could answer them for me. The first one is do you think that BP will be more careful and take better precautions in the future? Why or why not. The second is why do you think quit a few of the ways BP tried to seal the leaks didn't work? Thank you so much for taking the time to read and I hope respond to this. My group in history class has a current event do and the teacher wanted us to try to talk to the author of one the the articles we used. And we chose you because we felt your article was well written. And once again thank you so much, this has made my life so much easier.
I truly believe that these things always happen because of GREED. These companies are so focused on how much money they can make, that they really don't care about others.
thank you so much and that was very help full have a great day too! :)))
It's terrible that despite all efforts taken to prevent oil spill, these tragedies still take place every now and then. When are we going to ever learn to manage resource properly? That's the saddest part.
no gadagagagagagaga
Great article, glad to use it in my research paper
Great article, ahdjn dj german ick fraw very helpful robot show noodle
I apologize for the last couple posts, my frien posted that, not me, but i do actualy think that this is a great article. Do you think that BP is the only one responsible or do you think that it is partialy the presidents fault, like some other people.
thank you it was so helpful and @wolfpack dude why you comment on this like 20 times is this for a school projectÉ anyway thank you
i also am a student worin on a project
wow this was really helpful! i have a research paper due monday and this REALLY helped. Thanks so much :)
i failed my test form this cause of inaccurate info
Great informative hub!
I think we should find out the affecting thing and the reason behind it and should work on it to destroy these kind of fall. Thank you so much for this Hub.
and thank you for the showing the reason behind it.
Great Hub!
This was interesting. Didn't know how technically the spoil happened, since I've missed news when it just happened, and after they were only talking of how hard it will be to clean it up.
Thanks wolfpack! And I think its awesome how you thank everybody! So in advanced, you're welcome :)
Thanks a lot!! it was very helpful to me!
i like the information that u gave me. i have a project due on next monday and i needed to research about the oil spill. thanks for helping me!
what great info!
Thank you so much wolfpack5, this was so informative, im in the sixth grade and am doing my first essay. I chose one of the toughest subjects, the oil spill, I've had problems finding true things, and i have to write down my resources,This had so many things so i do not have to bounce back and forth to different sites..... Thank You So Much!!! You also made it easy for a 6th grader to comprehend!!
Great Hub!
I think this is an interesting topic. Thanks for the information.
HI !!(:
I'm happy I stopped by too. haha :)
Thank you, this information was so helpful! Needed to know about how the oil spill happened for a school project so thank you:)
I was on the team that helped put the cap on the well. Today, I am laid off as are 1000's of workers in the Gulf.
Why? There were 1000's of rigs working in the Gulf and all the ships that support them. When a rig costs you a million dollars a day to run, or ship costs you $250k a day, you don't want it sitting around waiting on congress for 6 months idle.
So what do you do? You pick up and move to South Africa, India, China and other areas of the world where you are welcome to keep working. Once you get there, you're not going to pick up and come all the way back, when congress decides you can go to work again. Sorry.
This is another major government blunder.
The economic tidal-wave is just poking its head on the horizon. I fear this is going to be the South's economic 911. Since were talking about Florida to Mexico, in this economy I don't know if we can handle it. I guess we'll see.

very informative.... thanks for sharing

hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
Just as the FDA regulates safety standards for food and drugs, isn't there an agency that is responsible for regulating how well these systems are being built? I mean, it would be in the oil companies interest to make sure they complied with standards if there were any, so that they don't suffer a huge profit loss and DESTROY ecosystems, (yeah, me being a biology nerd and whatnot, I'm not too happy about that...but moving on). With all the dangerous oil spills that have happened, you think we would learn, but for now, I will buy that Dawn Dishwasher soap that donates 50% of the profit to saving affected wildlife in that region, even if it's insignificant. Great hub, voted UP!
Great hub, BP is gay. Just sayin.
hey wolfpack brill hub and very usefull for me being as im doing water pollution very informative but try doing a spellcheck from time to time and thanks again very informative.
oh shut up
Please let me know if we can vote up twice on a hub, because I just read your hub again, and it is so good that I rated it up again on this second visit. God Bless you. I wonder how the gulf is doing now days.
Thanx this site really helped :)
i have a question, when did the oil spill happened? july 12 2011?
Can you please give me a source that proves that they were celebrating before this happened? I wanna put it in my essay but my partner want a source that will cross reference that fact.
why do they even take pic
Thx i really need this for my report! IIsmileII
i love fart what about u!!!!!!!!!1
I still dont understand. i also have a project and it is due tomorrow. please some one help me1
thx for the info! but what do i put down for bibliography?????
THAT IS SO SAD WHAT HAPPEND!!!!!!!!!!!!BUT IS IT WORST THAN THE EARTH QUAKE IN CHRIST CHURCH??
perfect
The REASON the spill happened was because many safety protocols were ignored in order to get the drilling done faster. It was human negligence fueled by greed. It was not simply a mistake that happened. People working at BP decided not to wait until a drill bit of the proper size came in. They didn't follow protocols. What they did was illegal and it resulted in the deaths of 11 people.
Why no one worships God? I am the only one who worship God and talk about God. The majority people do not like to talk about God. They are engulfed in sex, beer, and all of the manner of sins. Is this true? Is God angry with the people who are always unthankful and forgets God all day and night till death just like Whitney Houston?

Informative hub, thank you for sharing.
